TOKYO -- Japan's economy contracted a real 0.2 percent from the previous quarter, the equivalent of an annualized 1.0 percent, in the January-March period, the government said in a report on Wednesday.

According to the Cabinet Office, this was the first contraction for Japan in two quarters of real gross domestic product, which is the total of goods and services produced in a country and adjusted for inflation. (Japan-GDP-Contract)

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 31,352 new COVID-19 cases as of midnight Tuesday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 17,861,744, the health authorities said Wednesday.

The daily caseload was down from 35,117 the previous day and lower than 43,910 tallied a week ago, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. (South Korea-COVID-19)

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia reported 1,469 new COVID-19 infections as of midnight Tuesday, bringing the national total to 4,481,278, according to the health ministry.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand recorded 32 more deaths and 9,570 new community cases of COVID-19, the Ministry of Health said on Wednesday.

The ministry said in a statement that the total number of publicly reported deaths with COVID-19 in New Zealand is 1,017. (New Zealand-COVID-19)
