KUALA LUMPUR, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia reported 1,697 new COVID-19 infections as of midnight Monday, bringing the national total to 4,479,809, according to the Health Ministry.

There are no new imported cases, with all 1,697 fresh infections being local transmissions, data released on the ministry's website showed.

Five more deaths have been reported, bringing the death toll to 35,620.

The ministry reported 1,548 new recoveries, bringing the total number of the cured and discharged to 4,413,310.

Among 30,879 active cases, 40 are being held in intensive care and 22 of those are in need of assisted breathing.

There were 9,228 vaccine doses administered on Monday alone, and 85.4 percent of the population have received at least one dose, 82.5 percent are fully vaccinated and 49.2 percent have received boosters.
