SUVA -- Ratu Wiliame Katonivere became Fiji's new president after he received majority votes in Parliament on Friday.
He replaces Jioji Konrote who has held this position for two terms.
Katonivere was nominated by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama while Opposition Whip Lynda Tabuya nominated Social Democratic Liberal Party member of Parliament Ro Teimumu Kepa for the President's post. (Fiji-President)

KABUL -- Thousands of Afghans have received humanitarian assistance within a week from Oct. 11-17 across Afghanistan, a United Nations agency confirmed on Friday.
In northeast, 2,625 internally displaced people, who recently returned to their villages, received household items in Badakhshan province, the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Afghanistan said in a press release on its website.
"An additional 6,013 returnees received humanitarian assistance across the northeast. A total of 164,556 vulnerable people received food assistance under the World Food Programme (WFP) seasonal assistance program in Badakhshan, Kunduz, and Takhar provinces," the release said. NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally rose to 34,143,236 on Friday, as 15,786 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the federal health ministry's latest data.
Besides, 231 more deaths were recorded since Thursday morning, taking the death toll to 453,042.
Currently there are 175,745 active cases in the country, with a decrease of 3,086 during the period. (India-COVID-19)

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia reported another 6,210 new COVID-19 infections as of midnight Thursday, bringing the national total to 2,413,592, according to the health ministry.
Some 42 of the new cases are imported, with 6,168 being local transmissions, data released on the ministry's website showed.
Another 96 more deaths have been reported, bringing the death toll to 28,234. (Malaysia-COVID-19)
