French Polynesia has been battered by Cyclone Oli, with a red alert declared in Tahiti and nearby islands on Friday.

Winds of up to 200 kilometres per hour were registered in the archipelago, with several people ordered to higher ground to avoid the worst effects.

Several people are reported to have been injured in their homes, which have been beaten by the debris and high winds.

Hundreds of houses were damaged when the winds strengthened, pulling down trees and power and telephone lines.

Schools and roads were closed and car travel was banned in Tahiti and Moorea.

Evacuees have been housed in brick churches and schools.

Cyclone Oli was upgraded from a tropical storm on Wednesday night.
