The reclusive writer died of natural causes at his home in the state of New Hampshire.

Three of his subsequent books were also best-sellers.
Jerome David Salinger was born in New York and grew up in Manhattan where he published numerous short stories in magazines.
In 1953, he retreated into seclusion in New Hampshire, but had two partners at different times and raised children.
