Nuclear treaty discussed in presidential phone hook-up

Malaysia News.Net

Presidents Obama and Medvedev have had what has been described as a constructive telephone call on a landmark nuclear arms deal.

The Kremlin has reported that President Medvedev of Russia spoke to the US president about a treaty for "the near future."

On its official web site, the Kremlin said: "The heads of state objectively discussed topical issues pertaining to Russian-US relations, including signing in the near future a new treaty on strategic arms reduction."

It added the United States had initiated the conversation.

Top US officials and their Russian counterparts met in Moscow last week for the beginning of meetings between the sides to discuss the successor arrangement to the START nuclear treaty.

Moscow has said important steps were made towards an agreement, with any gaps in the respective positions expected to be bridged within a few weeks.
