Six pupils of a Baghdad primary boys school have been killed in a blast which was apparently caused by the detonation of explosives which had been stored within school grounds.

Two other unidentified people were killed in the blast while twenty-five pupils and three teachers were among 41 people wounded.

The ammunition blast occurred in the Baghdad Shiite neighbourhood of Sadr City when a rubbish heap was set on fire.

The rubbish pile was hiding a cache of bombs which had been hidden underground by suspected Shiite soldiers.

The explosion left a crater of around four metres in diameter and severely damaged three nearby houses.
