Catholic nuns agree to pay to victims of abuse

Malaysia News.Net

An order of Irish catholic nuns has offered 128 million euros to settle abuse allegations.

The Sisters of Mercy has offered money to the government as compensation payments to children formerly in the care of the nuns in schools and orphanages.

The offer is the largest from 18 orders of Catholic priests, brothers and nuns found guilty of constant child abuse.

The Sisters of Mercy, who ran scores of institutions for generations of Ireland’s deprived children, said in a statement the order "wholeheartedly regrets the suffering experienced by the children."

A nine-year state investigation in May ruled that the different orders permitted and covered up rape, molestation, physical abuse and mental cruelty in their children’s institutions.

The government demanded that the orders pay compensation payments to cover more than 14,000 abuse claimants worldwide.
