Malaysian Christian group slams government seizure of Bibles

Malaysia News.Net
Wednesday 4th November, 2009 (IANS)

A Christian group in Malaysia Wednesday criticised the government's confiscation of some 15,000 Malay-language Bibles which contain the word 'Allah,' or God in Arabic.

In a statement, the Christian Federation of Malaysia (CFM) called for the immediate release of the Bibles, saying that withholding the holy books would be denying Malay-speaking believers the right to practise their faith.

The government in March banned the use of the word 'Allah' in non-Muslim publications, sparking fierce condemnation from religious groups who argue that the government had no legal right to ban the use of a word that predated the Koran and Islam.

Earlier this week, Christian groups said that the government seized 15,000 Bibles, most of which were to be sent to the eastern states of Sabah and Sarawak, where the Malay language is most commonly used among people of all religions.

The CFM said in its statement Wednesday that the reason given by the authorities, which was that the Bibles were 'prejudicial to public order', was ridiculous and offensive.

'Bibles in (Malay) have been used since before the independence of our country and have never been the cause of any public disorder,' said Bishop Ng Moon Hing, chairman of the group.

'It is this action by the authorities themselves which is an affront to good public order,' he said in the statement.

'We call on the relevant government officials who have neither the authority nor the right to act in this unconscionable manner to explain their action to the church leaders and to the public.'

Malaysia's constitution declares it a secular state but with Islam as its official religion. About 60 percent of Malaysia's 25 million people are Muslims.

Minority religious groups have often complained that their constitutional right to practise different faiths have come under threat by what is seen to be an ultra-Islamisation move by the government in recent times.

Malaysian Christian group slams government seizure of Bibles

This notion that govermentis against religious practice of the minority is absurd and a blatant lies just to gain momentum on this issueand also the accusation of ultra-Islamisation is also alie. It very unfortunate that this accusation is coming from a Bishop>My personal view this Bishop has an agenda.

Religions and Politics

Our government should wise enough to stay away from religion. It is a very costly mistake and decision to insert religion into politics. Religions should stay out of politics and keep practicing their regligion believe within their own community.

Naughty and cunning

It really cheeky for the christians to use the unique term 'Allah' as equivalent to the generic term God. Though 'Allah' means God, it really not generic but closely associated only with Islam. There are so many words such as 'Tuhan' etc in Malay that could be used to represent God in the Malay Bible. Why use 'Allah' which is reveared by the Muslims?? Please do not instigate another religion or the government. You will do yourself a favour.

SaltFish Ragen

SaltFish’s hidden agenda is agreeing to abusing others' rights in the pretext of 'prejudicial to public order'. Cheeky is those who live inside tiny little coconut shell having only limited religious terminologies and Arabic language.. They even caught their own religious people without sensible reason. What else cannot happen?

Retardness and close mindedness of Malaysians.

This is a total madness of our gov’t. The word Allah means God in Arabic. Its simple! If so, what does the word God mean in BM? We need to leave this religious things and live as one people or else there is NOTHING like one Malaysia. Period!

Hello Bishop Ng,for years we as Malaysian were so happy with the term God being used in Al-Qoran as Allah, and in Bible as God and may be in other religion as something else. There were no trouble or uneasiness on the usage of these words among Malaysians, So why not use God instead of Allah, surely Christians will be more than happy with their God, unless you have hidden agendas or you want the Christians to believe in Islam and totally forget about God coz it seems that you are moving towards this!

Usage of the term around the world

For a description of the usage of the term Allah around the world, see Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allah. The term has been used even before Islam, and is used by Arab and Indonesian followers of Isa Al-Masih (Jesus). It has been used for many generations in Malaysia too, particularly by the bumiputera of Sabah and Sarawak who follow Jesus. These people are now being told that they cannot use the term? Are they not to worship God as the Rukunegara states?

Confiscation of Bibles

It is a sad day when the Malaysian government goes down this slippery slope. On one hand the government preaches 1Malaysia and on the other continuing to dismantle other religious faiths. A religion that does not allow or cannot withstand criticism is a very repressive religion. What is it afraid of? Adherents leaving once they find out the truth? Only Allah or God has monopoly over all creations. Man has no monopoly over peoples' faiths, and definitely no monopoly over Allah or God. It is a day of shame for all Malaysians when the government forbids a group of people to use a word that has been in existence since before Malaysia was even a word.

Commonsense

Leaving aside the rantings of deluded crackpots like Christ Faith man, the word Allah predates Christianity. I have a CD recorded in Syria which includes 4th century Nestorian chanting (Nestorians were an early sect of Christianity), and the word Allah is used. This CD is apparently sold throughout the Middle East. The government, poorly advised by

Please be fair to your Muslim friends.
If the text is in Arabic, perhaps it is appropriate to use Allah in Bible. But if the text is in Malay, it is only logical to use a Malay word such as Tuhan. The use of allah in Bible in the Malay language has a hidden agenda.

view from other part of the world

As a christian living in the US, I just wanted to let people know how things are seen here. Allah is viewed strictly as the Muslim god. It would be unheard of to use Allah and God interchangeably here. I find it interesting that in Malaysia it’s completely opposite. The christians are fighting to call God Allah.

true name of a universal god has no name

'god' is a base name define for ahigher power. in diferent ancient culture eg in sumeria and babylonia, they had names for each god, and each of this local god are not gods, but deities served to protest their harvest and property and so. for eg, dagon was a philistine deity, bel is a babylonian god for the moon, ashdod, the god ra for the ancient egyptian, jevovah english version for YAHWEH for the israel god and so on.

No one could stop the Bible

This book called Bible in English, Alkitab in Malay is the most hated book in the world. Many zealous people in the past tried to destroy this book from being circulated. They tried burning all the Bible found, charged to court those found having Bible and burned in the stake those found reading. Yet the Bible continue to flourish. Now a day, it has been translated into almost all languages in the world. The government will not be able to withstand God. God shall interfere when His cause is challanged. Wait and see.

why

Here Malaysia goes again making themselves fools in the eyes of the free world. the government are like children who keep making stupid mistakees that the free world laughs at and expects because they are used to Malaysia acting like this. Beware christians this government is out to get anyone that is not Muslim. It will get worse and worse. Christians it is time to march on the walls of Tyranny.

Down the slippery slope

Malaysians need to wake up and realize that this story doesn’t have to do just with Christians but is about personal freedom! If you give the government an centimeter in this instance they will take 100 kilometers! The powerful will rule over the minority and will begin to tell everyone what they should think or believe. If your beliefs are true then they should be able to stand up to being scrutinized by anyone without you getting upset. Muslims seem to be most sensitive to this. Can not Allah stand up for Himself?? Democracy Malaysia, Not Theocracy!
