Musharraf casts aside impeachment threat

Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf will go to the Beijing Olympics as planned, just hours after he cancelled his departure amid fears that his opponents could impeach him.

A foreign ministry spokesman said the president would leave for the Olympic opening ceremony as planned on Thursday, having earlier confirmed that the trip was off.

The turmoil follows speculation that the coalition government was close to agreement on how to remove the President following months of disagreement on the best way to remove the former military dictator who seized power in 1999.
